Snowboarding: January 1985


Although sliding on barrel staves was around at the beginning of the century, 1964 saw the real introduction with Sherman Poppen’s “Snurfer”. 1970 saw the appearance of Winterstick with national news coverage by Newsweek and Playboy in 1975, followed by Tom Sims, Jake Burton Carpenter and Chuck Barfoot in the mid/late 70s jumping into the game. 1981 saw steel edges coming back to the snowboard and here we are at 1985, SKIING Magazine introducing it to the ski demographic.
