On this day, December 16th, 50 years ago, The Jackson Hole Guide newspaper reported on the forthcoming opening of the Jackson Hole Ski Area, a short 2 days away. Although ready to open (with the exception of the tram), the main ingredient for skiing was in short supply:
Ski Area Poised For Opening: Praying for Snow
The new ski area at Teton Village is ready for their grand opening this Saturday December 18, with one exception – insufficient snow.
In an area where the snow is usually several feet deep by this time of year, there is very little of the white stuff, and all concerned with the operation are having daily “snow dances” to try to entice the gods to cut loose with a good snow storm.
Other tan the dearth of snow, everything is ready. There are three double chair lifts ready to go – one on the beginners slope and two on the Apres-Vous run. The Seven Levels Inn is open, and Mr. And Mrs. Dick Oberreit are opening their new Alpenhof Inn next Thursday, Dec. 23. Reservations have been made, and avid skiers are anxiously waiting to try the new area. Everything depends on the whims of the weatherman!
